TASK 1
Christmas truce 1914
On Christmas Eve a British solider named Private Frank Sumpter heard the German soldiers singing Christmas carols. At first they thought it was a trick, so the British popped up and waved quickly, then went back down again. But there was no gun fire so they joined in singing and then they met in the middle of the 2 trenches.
The German and the British had a game of soccer they were giving each other gifts like cigarettes, food, buttons and hats. They also let each other bury the dead soldiers that have been shot in the grounds between the trenches.
Some other places also had a truce as well, but some places didn’t and kept on fighting.
The truce ended on different days, some that night, others on New Years Eve. They didn’t want to start fighting again but they would get punished (badly) if they didn’t.
